About the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range
Regularly making headlines with its Performance version, the Tesla Model 3 is also offered in a discreet entry-level version "Standard Plus". Range, consumption, performance... what is the cheapest Tesla worth? We invite you to find out in this review.
A rear-wheel drive with a small battery
In terms of aesthetics, this entry-level Model 3 hardly differs from other Teslas. A direct competitor to the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, it maintains the same size with a length of 4.69 m, a width of 1.85 m, and a height of 1.44 m.
Regarding the engine, this Model 3 SR+ is content with a single electric motor. Placed on the rear axle, it develops up to 325 horsepower. It is powered by a battery with a capacity of 57 kWh. That’s 17 kWh less than the Long Range version (74 kWh). In usable capacity, it reaches 54.5 kWh. This is ultimately not much more than a new generation Renault ZOÉ, which carries 52 kWh.
Equipped with 18-inch wheels with aerodynamic hubcaps to optimize range, the Model 3 SR+ also receives a panoramic roof as standard. At the trunk level, it has the same hatchback system as other versions. The volume remains generous with a capacity of 425 liters, not including the underfloor compartment, very practical for hiding the charging cable, and the second trunk at the front, which is spacious enough to store two cabin bags.
Without reaching the quality level of German premiums, the interior finish is very decent for an American car. In the rear seats, the SR+ remains as generous as other versions with three real seats and ample legroom. At the front, there are electric seats with faux leather covering and numerous storage spaces.
In the center of the dashboard is the large touchscreen. Installed in a horizontal position, it allows control of all the car’s features. It also provides access to various updates and the map to easily locate nearby superchargers.
Behind the wheel
In the city, the Model 3 SR+ is almost flawless. With a length of less than 4.70, it is not cumbersome and has the right size for the European market. Wider than other models in its category, it still proves less easy to park, with the turning radius, limited to 11.8 m, not facilitating maneuvers.
In terms of sportiness, Tesla's entry-level model boasts a 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.6 seconds, which is better than a BMW 330i that performs the same exercise in 6.4 seconds. On winding roads, the car is well-balanced, with the integration of the batteries in the floor optimizing the center of gravity. While the acceleration out of corners is decent and the braking effective, this Model 3 SR+ seemed less sharp to us compared to the Long Range or Performance versions. The reason: the absence of the second front motor, which makes it more prone to understeer.
On the highway, this Model 3 SR+ enjoys the same ergonomic advantages as the rest of the models in the range and notably includes adaptive cruise control. There is still quite a bit of wind noise, especially from 120-130 km/h, as well as road noise with the 18-inch wheels. Like the other versions, the SR+ does not offer compatibility with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Waze fans will therefore have to rely on their mobile phones.
In terms of consumption, this Model 3 SR+ is a queen of frugality. Over 50 km of expressways, our consumption was 18 kWh/100 km, which offers roughly 300 km of real-world range. Ultimately, the consumption of this entry-level Model 3 is lower than that of a ZOE, with performance superior to that of a BMW 330i. Over the entirety of our test, covering nearly 450 km, our average consumption was 17.2 kWh/100 km.
